The
Directorate is responsible for international
promotion of the Coast Guard Auxiliary image by means of communicating
good will and international cooperation with other Coast Guards
and volunteer organizations dedicated to the safety of life at
sea. Its missions are to:
- Support Coast Guard International Programs
- Enhance
international awareness of the Auxiliary
- Promote
the growth and development of volunteer Search & Rescue
(SAR) organizations with
an emphasis in the Caribbean region
- Exchange
useful information and materials
These
missions are achieved by developing and maintaining effective
liaison with international maritime safety organizations. One major program undertaken by the Directorate is the Caribbean Maritime Search and Rescue (CAR-SAR) Initiative.
The CAR-SAR initiative was created to enhance the security, stability, and safety of life at sea in the Caribbean region through the strengthening and establishment of local Coast Guard volunteer components and non-government volunteer SAR organizations that can provide their government SAR and other non-law enforcement support, thereby freeing their forces to better focus on law enforcement and security missions. CAR-SAR objectives are to:
- Provide a greater capability within Caribbean countries to surge larger numbers of trained and properly equipped maritime assets to meet the requirements imposed by natural and/or man-made disasters.
- Foster regionalism within the Caribbean by encouraging the sharing of ideas and experiences between the countries and volunteer organizations and with the USCG, USCG Auxiliary
- Achieve this through emphasizing the importance of supporting Caribbean volunteer SAR and volunteer components of Caribbean Coast Guard organizations, and gaining acceptance of Caribbean governments of the value and benefits the volunteers can provide in assisting in and accomplishing non-law enforcement missions
